California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). The Church of the Messiah was located in the Olneyville section of Providence, Rhode Island. In the mid-nineteenth century, Olneyville became a center for textile manufacturing.
